Development of novel cationic phosphorus ligands

The phosphorus ligand having an α-cation forms a metal complex with a high π acidity due to a strong induction effect of the substituent. Prof. Alcarazo designs and synthesizes a ligand in which a cationic heterocyclic compound is bound to phosphorus. He applies it to various catalytic reactions [1].

Recently, his group succeeded in the development of chiral phosphorus ligands and its application to catalytic asymmetric synthesis of optically active helicene derivatives [2].

Creation of new reagents utilizing isoelectronicity

Prof. Alcarazo was inspired by reagents in an isolobal relationship, and developed a novel hypervalent sulfur reagent that behaves like a hypervalent iodine reagent [3].
